Wikis

Wikis - Their use by the library world are many and varied, I can see that. One use is for training staff. I've seen wikis where there are modules set up for staff to follow and they can add comments and new sections to the whole - this is useful and gets over the "re-inventing the wheel" concept. If someone has already put together some information they can post it to share. It also allows all to take part rather than one person.
Once a wiki is up and running though I think it all comes down to how it is marketed and publicised. If this does not happen effectively the wiki could run out of steam so to speak.
Also there may be people in a community who would like to contribute but may not have access to technology or basic skills.
Sandbox - I looked at the PBWiki Learning2.0 wiki and found a rather dull listing of what people like and don't like. The words "play" and "adventure" were promised here but I think I would have more fun in a real sandbox!

Web 2.0 Library 2.0

Web 2.0 Library 2.0
I've read a few of the articles and can see how Web 2.0 features can become Library 2.0 features - helping libraries collaborate, improve resource sharing and communication. One author mentions adopting web features e.g those used by Amazon & Google and that libraries should welcome submissions of reviews etc. I think we already do! However I often see on various blogs, forums, reviews etc that the comments section is often zero. Maybe we have frameworks but only a small section of society are ready to use them yet.
One author talks about getting rid of "just in case" print collections - I agree that we should prune the print collection as some forms of information are better served in electronic format - but the important thing is to include all the community - which means keeping print formats along with electronic!

Technorati

Well, this is my first visit here since December last year! Been too busy enjoying travel and experiences in the real world I think!
So - technorati - I have looked at this a couple of times and it's not something that immediately attracts my attention. I did a search on Michael Palin - as I have seen a funny video clip recently where they suggest he should run as McCain's running mate rather than Sarah Palin - great!
The first few entries of my search brought up McCain / Palin articles in the posts and I had to scroll down a few to get any about the wonderful Mr Palin. However the tags were all relevant linking to other Monty Python members. The video section brought up the one I saw straight away - but I think it was easier to find on youtube.
Don't think I would use Technorati much - too cluttered and busy as a site.

#13 del.icio.us

I've opened an account with del.icio.us and started to add my favourites. I can see this could be very useful as I will be able to access my favourites anywhere. At work there have been times when I have wanted to show a website to a customer and this will be a quick and easy way to access them.
I'll have to spend more time and play around to make the format look more interesting.

#12 Rollyo

Yey! I've now got my very own search tool to help me dream away and plan holidays. I will add more sites to this as I find them. I can see this tool will be very useful for other topics both at work and at home.

# Library Thing

I have saved a few books I really enjoyed reading and placed them onto this blog using Library Thing. I quite enjoyed playing around with this and could imagine revisiting and expanding the bookshelf. I can think of quite a few reasons to use Library Thing such as creating a list to pass onto friends who may have asked for recommendations - it's easy to go blank when you are asked on the spot!

More Flickr fun!

I've just been playing around with a photo of some reindeer we use for Christmas decorations. I wanted to put a speech balloon on the photo but would never have known how to do it before exploring Flickr! Matthew doesn't work here anymore but I know the photo will make him laugh.
